I’m writing this post on the morning of President Russell M. Nelson’s funeral. He passed away on September 27, 2025, at the age of 101. He was called to serve as an apostle of the Lord in April 1984. As I reflect on his life, I’m reminded how his words consistently pointed me to Christ and personal growth.
I’ve been reviewing my digital notes finding quotes made by this great teacher. I have found many profound statements by this man I sustained as a Prophet. I wanted to share a few that impacted my life.
Don’t Compartmentalize Your Life
“Danger lurks when we divide ourselves with expressions such as my private life, my professional life, or even my best behavior. Living life in separate compartments can lead to internal conflict and exhausting tension. To escape that tension, many people unwisely resort to addicting substances, pleasure seeking, or self-indulgence, which in turn produce more tension, thus creating a vicious cycle.
Inner peace comes only as we maintain the integrity of truth in all aspects of our lives. When we covenant to follow the Lord and obey His commandments, we accept His standards in every thought, action, and deed.” Living by Scriptural Guidance
This quote had a major impact on my life. I wrote it on one of the blank pages at the front of the last hard copy scriptures I ever purchased.
The adversary wants us to live differently depending on our circumstances or the people around us. He pressures us to conform, but true peace comes when we live with integrity — the same person in all situations.
Receiving Revelation
“Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will grow into the principle of revelation.” Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives
I’ve always been someone who prefers clear, simple answers. When I first heard this quote, it felt like President Nelson was offering a straightforward guide to something that can feel vague.
He gave us a clear, step-by-step pattern:
- Pray about your concerns, fear, weaknesses, and longings of your heart
- Listen
- Write the thoughts that come to your mind
- Record your feelings
- Follow through with action
It doesn’t get any clearer. He gave us the pattern to receive revelation and needed promptings. He provided us a way to hear the instruction Heaven wants to provide.
Daily Repentance
“Nothing is more liberating, more ennobling, or more crucial to our individual progression than is a regular, daily focus on repentance. Repentance is not an event; it is a process. It is the key to happiness and peace of mind.” We Can Do Better and Be Better
I’ll always remember President Nelson’s invitation to repent daily. While I’m far from perfect at it, the days I take time to honestly reflect and seek improvement are the days I feel most centered.
Those moments of honest repentance bring both humility and peace — a reminder that through the Savior’s Atonement, our efforts truly matter.
President Nelson’s teachings continue to inspire me to live with integrity, seek revelation, and repent daily. Though he will be deeply missed, I’m grateful we can revisit his words anytime and let his example continue to guide our lives.
